As any theatre kid would, I have been looking at any and any new information of the highly anticipated “INTO THE WOODS” film! Recently, Disney realesed a teaser screenplay for INTO THE WOODS. I’ll try not to give too much away but there are a few noticible, yet understandable differences. I’ll do my best and give away just one spoiler that the Narrater is not a character in this movie, but it is the Baker doing the narration, which I found to be an interesting choice. It makes sense with at the Finale, we all know the Baker retells his story to his son with a heart breaking moment. “Sometime’s people leave you halfway through the wood. Do not let it greif you, No one leaves for good. You are not alone. No one is alone. Hold him to the light no. Let him see the glow. Things will be alright now. Tell him what you know..” I’m so excited for this movie! Are you?

Bless me, Audra McDonald, for I have cringed. It’s been four days since I watched NBC’s The Sound of Music Live, and I’m not exactly sure whether to repent or not. On the one hand, I wasted three hours of my life MESMERIZED by the EXTRAORDINARY AWFULNESS of this eye-roll-a-minute disaster master. We here at LMezz had high hopes for this show and were able to give Carrie Underwood the benefit of the doubt. Then these hopes were dashed upon the jagged rocks, located at the bottom of WTF Mountain and next to Bad Choices Valley.
On the other hand, if I hadn’t watched this hot mess, I wouldn’t have been able to understand these awesome tweets below!

Sometimes people do things that leave me speechless. This is one of them. I am utterly outraged, but thoughts aren’t easily coming together.
I will say this: if you cannot get to New York to see the musical, borrow the movie. It’s on Netflix. It’s fabulous, but without all of the AMAZING music of Cindy Lauper. And it’s based on a true story.

I saw this only a few hours ago an was very moved. I know this isn’t theatre related but Bravo for Tom Daley!
I smiled a great deal this weekend what with Maria Bello’s New York Times essay about relationships (click here) and Tom Daley’s YouTube release about his male lover (click here) and the ways in which the increase of such open, honest approaches to life and questions as to why we are even discussing such things – meaning we soon won’t be – have just validated a world view of which I have dreamed and long predicted would ULTIMATELY be the case.
Although it’s happening much faster than I had dared hope.
I am right so often it is – frankly – terrifying.
As a child I had this recurring dream in which the world was gender-free. I don’t know precisely how this world-view planted itself in my brain, but I am grateful for whatever happy concatenation of occurrences was responsible for the result. Although I was not always so.

As many of us theatre kids know- Cats is already a very popular musical, and even people who don’t know the musical can easily belt “Memory” off the top of their heads. When I saw this post on Broadway.com I knew I HAD to comment on it. This is very intresting to me because I’m currently in a production of Cats. But I just don’t know if the average audience member would appreciate Cats as much as the next theatre kid would. If you are familiar with Cats– you know that its is very different from anything you’ve ever seen because there is no plot at all- just random stories about random cats…do you think audiences are ready for that on the big screen? On the other hand- the most recent movie- musical phenomenon was Les Miserables which was very popular with theatre kids- and non theatre kids as well- and maybe that’s just because Les Mis is flawless and Aaron Teviet and Eddie Redmayne are just adorable…
Well, what do you think? Will Cats sell in movie theatres”? Are you excited for it?
SIDE NOTE: The next movie musical is Into the Woods which Disney is producing and I’m absolutely so excited…I think theatres making a popular comeback tbh and I couldn’t be happier (“simply couldn’t be happier….”) haha!

Two performances – Samuel Barnett as shipwrecked gentlewoman Viola and Mark Rylance as Lady Olivia – make this Twelfth Night essential viewing. Even people who aren’t particularly into Shakespeare are likely to enjoy Rylance’s multicolored and often hilarious portrayal (although most of his best stuff comes after the intermission, trust me). This Twelfth Night may not be as definitive as the Richard III it alternates with; the fact that it is the more enjoyable evening overall is a measure of how great the play itself is.
Twelfth Night has long been my favorite of Shakespeare’s romantic comedies. In it, Shakespeare takes love between people of the same sex very seriously — all you have to do is look at the character names. The play follows the romantic adventures of Viola and her identical twin Sebastian, both shipwrecked in the enchanted dukedom of Illyria.

my friend saw this who is always VERY critical about Broadway shows- usually in a negative way. And she said Godot was absolutely genius…therefore I recommend it.
Neil Patrick Harris never fails to wow me when he hosts the Tony Awards. I was a huge fan of last year’s opening number (“What if Life Were More Like Theatre?”) and wondered how he would top it. Well top it, he did. The number relied less heavily on witty setups and overall concept than last year’s number, instead turning to massive dance numbers, sets, and stunts to open the show. The number worked well due its balance of over-the-top spectacle and subtly humorous lyrics. The number also featured an emotional climax when Neil stood alone on stage singing about the kids at home being inspired by the Tonys:

well usually the first thing that comes to mind when someone says “theatrical” is like some old quote from Hamlet or Shakespeare “to be or not to be” “all the word’s a stage and the men and women in it are just merely players” but what people don’t always remember is how much theatre has EVOLVED into modern fun theatre. An older lady in a show I was in told me she really didn’t like modern theatre and I was a little bit shocked because I thought how do you LOVE theatre but not modern theatre? But then it hit back at me- do I love older theatre? So here’s my conclusion. I think to be a well- rounded “theatrical” person you have to love everything about there not just the upbeat show tunes from Millie- but also Phantom of the Opera and Shakespeare and all. I’ve been in both Shakespeare shows and modern and I’m not saying we all have to be in shows to show we care. I think just reading a Hamlet script for a few minutes would do. Then I thought. What has never changed about theatre- LIVE THEATRE- is that it’s always live. and nothing gives you quite that rush of sharing your work with an audience. The actors that were merely players in Shakespeare’s stage did it. And so do we. So I guess that’s just my meaningless spiel of the day. But the point is love and everything about it. Be….theatrical.
NEW YORK (AP) – On a feel-good night for Broadway, it was only natural that the Tony award go to its most feel-good musical, the joyous “Kinky Boots.” But most everything about Sunday’s Tony telecast was warmhearted, from inspiring speeches about the theatrical community to the inspired antics of Neil Patrick Harris, who should officially be awarded the host job on a permanent basis.
It was an especially happy night for female theater artists: In a rare feat, women took home both directing prizes, for a musical (Diane Paulus for the high-energy “Pippin” revival) and for a play (Pam MacKinnon for the searing revival of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”).
