Today I ventured back into the world of musical theater to see Once, The Musical.
It is based on the 2006 movie of the same name.
In one eventful week, a musician who believes that his dream is dead meets a woman who by the end of the week, sees the beauty and the potential of his music. Their love is mutual, but life may tear them apart.
I did not have the opportunity to see the original cast, but the more recent cast with Arthur Darvill and Joanna Christie.
It’s not the typical musical, which makes it stand out among the cornicopia of musicals currently on Broadway. It is also un-typical is the audience is allowed to walk up to the stage and order from the bar. Most shows have a fourth wall, which is only broken after the show. Neil Patrick Harris never fails to wow me when he hosts the Tony Awards. I was a huge fan of last year’s opening number (“What if Life Were More Like Theatre?”) and wondered how he would top it. Well top it, he did. The number relied less heavily on witty setups and overall concept than last year’s number, instead turning to massive dance numbers, sets, and stunts to open the show. The number worked well due its balance of over-the-top spectacle and subtly humorous lyrics. The number also featured an emotional climax when Neil stood alone on stage singing about the kids at home being inspired by the Tonys:

DENVER (CBS4) – The Denver Center for the Performing Arts box office started Monday with 56,000 “The Book of Mormon” tickets to sell. By the close of business on Monday, after the biggest sales day in Denver Center history, they only had 18,000 tickets left — and they keep going down,
The hottest ticket in Denver last year remains the hottest ticket in Denver this year. While there was a hiccup or two along the way — a system slowdown – and a mistaken sold-out notice that no other news station in town, besides CBS4, bothered to check, it is going very well.

well usually the first thing that comes to mind when someone says “theatrical” is like some old quote from Hamlet or Shakespeare “to be or not to be” “all the word’s a stage and the men and women in it are just merely players” but what people don’t always remember is how much theatre has EVOLVED into modern fun theatre. An older lady in a show I was in told me she really didn’t like modern theatre and I was a little bit shocked because I thought how do you LOVE theatre but not modern theatre? But then it hit back at me- do I love older theatre? So here’s my conclusion. I think to be a well- rounded “theatrical” person you have to love everything about there not just the upbeat show tunes from Millie- but also Phantom of the Opera and Shakespeare and all. I’ve been in both Shakespeare shows and modern and I’m not saying we all have to be in shows to show we care. I think just reading a Hamlet script for a few minutes would do. Then I thought. What has never changed about theatre- LIVE THEATRE- is that it’s always live. and nothing gives you quite that rush of sharing your work with an audience. The actors that were merely players in Shakespeare’s stage did it. And so do we. So I guess that’s just my meaningless spiel of the day. But the point is love and everything about it. Be….theatrical.
NEW YORK (AP) – On a feel-good night for Broadway, it was only natural that the Tony award go to its most feel-good musical, the joyous “Kinky Boots.” But most everything about Sunday’s Tony telecast was warmhearted, from inspiring speeches about the theatrical community to the inspired antics of Neil Patrick Harris, who should officially be awarded the host job on a permanent basis.
It was an especially happy night for female theater artists: In a rare feat, women took home both directing prizes, for a musical (Diane Paulus for the high-energy “Pippin” revival) and for a play (Pam MacKinnon for the searing revival of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”).

The show is already renowned for its over-the-top musical numbers (this is a program based largely around Broadway musicals, mind you) and Harris brought his biting humor to the production, as evidenced by his sarcastic shout out to Shia LaBeouf, who left the cast of theater show “Orphans” earlier this year.

Women got their due at last night’s Tony Awards. For only the second time in history, two women directors took home the top prizes in their categories. And Cyndi Lauper became the first woman to win Best Original Score without a partner. Despite being named for a woman — Antoinette Perry — the awards have not been particularly kind to women artists, particularly playwrights and directors. So last night’s director’s sweep lit up social media with many hailing the awards telecast a huge victory.
Diane Paulus (left) won the Best Director of a Musical for the circus act-themed Pippin, which has wowed critics across the board since it opened. Pam MacKinnon (below), who was nominated last year for Best Director of a Play for Clybourne Park, was given the trophy for her staging of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
